So now non-black women are being celebrated for having big butts-what the what?

I’m almost at a loss for words after having watched J Lo’s video for “Booty” featuring Iggy Azalea. I mean, really?? Okay J Lo, you’re a grown woman I get it, and just because I may frown on you being 45 and a mother and wonder why in the world you would want to put that image of yourself out there at this point, hey, whatever works for you, and helps make you feel good about yourself.

With that said, what got me was the line Iggy says where she gives props to J Lo saying, “the last time you seen a booty this good, it was on Jenny from the block.”Um…. huh? By whose standards is she basing this on? But then again, Iggy is in J Lo’s video which means she is getting paid because of J Lo, so alright I’m gonna give you a pass on that one.

But then I happen to read a ridiculous article in Vogue magazine where it speaks on the fact that up until recently, having a large behind was not something most women sought out, and therefore it was a physical feature that was considered not particularly attractive. In other words, white women and women of color who subscribed to the white western ideal of what constitutes an attractive figure, did not like having big butts. Let’s just keep it real. Until….

J Lo! Yes, Vogue magazine credits J Lo for being the “original trailblazing butt girl” and “sparking the booty movement”. WTH?

How is it that the one feature that has always been synonymous with black women, looked down upon by most white women, is now suddenly the “it” feature, that white women and non-black women do anything to have–including buying one, or buying pads to insert in jeans and underwear. Some women even undergo surgery to get their behind looking like most black women’s naturally do.

Smh. Since slavery, black women have been subjected to the most cruel judgments and critiques, our bodies devalued and constantly up for public discussion. Last year, our First Lady couldn’t go more than a few days without someone having something negative to say about her physique. Now, most of the negative comments came from white men who I believe secretly desire black women and their curves, but that’s just my opinion. Then you have Serena who to this day has folks talkin about how she looks in her tennis outfits, and not always in a flattering way.

I’m not knockin any woman who wants a bigger butt, hell, most of us do! But what bothers me is when those same women don’t give props where props are due. Celebrate women of all races for their beautiful bodies, yes, but acknowledge the women whose figure you’re trying to emulate. That’s all I’m sayin.
