Becoming Better, One Lesson at a Time…
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on some of the biggest life lessons I’ve picked up along this wild, beautiful, occasionally chaotic journey of becoming a better version of myself. (Spoiler alert: growth is not always graceful.)
After plenty of trial and error- and a few “Well…that didn’t work” moments- I’ve realized there are a handful of habits that consistently help me maintain a positive mindset and show up as the best version of myself. Here’s what I’ve learned…
Self-Discipline: Future You Will Thank You
Self-discipline isn’t about being perfect. It’s about staying in charge of you instead of letting every mood, distraction, or shiny object run the show.
Our brains love routines. The more you can do important things at roughly the same time every day- working out, starting work, ending work (yes, ending work counts!), waking up, going to bed- the less negotiating you have to do with yourself.
Because let’s be honest…the inside voice conversation usually goes something like:
“I’ll work out after one more episode.”
Three episodes later…(in the SpongeBob narrator voice, lol)
“Hey, that’s okay cuz Tomorrow is a new day.” 😂
If your schedule is unpredictable, don’t worry. Just assign your priorities a specific time and place. Put them on your calendar like they’re a meeting with someone important- because they are. That someone is You.
Being Organized: Your Future Self Loves a Good System
Being organized doesn’t mean your pantry has to look like a Pinterest board.
It simply means reducing the daily chaos.
Clutter has a sneaky way of increasing stress. Ever spent twenty minutes looking for your glasses…while holding your glasses? (Please tell me it’s not just me.)
Or rushed into an important meeting feeling completely unprepared because you couldn’t find the one document you needed?
Organization saves time, reduces stress, and gives you more energy for the things that actually matter.
Learn the Superpower of Saying “No”
Here’s a lesson that took me a while:
Sometimes the problem isn’t that we need better time management. Sometimes…we’re just trying to be superheroes without the cape.
And keep in mind that every “yes” is automatically a “no” to something else. So… Before agreeing to another commitment, ask yourself:
- Will this bring me closer to the life I’m trying to build?
- What am I giving up by saying yes?
- Am I saying yes because I genuinely want to…or because I don’t want to disappoint someone?
Remember: “No” is a complete sentence. You don’t need to submit a PowerPoint presentation explaining your decision.
Be Prepared…But Don’t Marry the Plan
The Universe has a funny habit of laughing at our perfectly crafted plans.
Traffic happens.
Technology crashes.
People cancel.
Kids get sick.
Coffee spills…(Usually on the white shirt.)
While we can’t prepare for everything, we can prepare enough to pivot when life inevitably throws us a plot twist.
Preparation isn’t about controlling every outcome. It’s about giving yourself options.
As the saying goes, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.”
I’d add: Preparing makes you feel empowered to handle whatever Plan B, C, or Z shows up.
Practice Gratitude Every Single Day
If there’s one habit that changes everything, it’s gratitude.
Not because life suddenly becomes perfect.
But because gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s already meaningful.
Some days gratitude looks big:
A promotion.
Good health.
A new opportunity.
Other days it’s much smaller:
Hot coffee.
A phone call from someone you love.
Making it through a difficult day.
Finding your phone after accusing everyone else of moving it. 😅
A grateful heart is a powerful heart. And just know that the more we intentionally notice what’s good, the more resilient, joyful, and grounded we become.
I’m still learning. I’m still growing. I still have days where I procrastinate, overcommit, can’t find my glasses, and wonder why I walked into a room.
But every day gives us another opportunity to choose better habits, extend ourselves a little grace, and become just a little bit more of the person we’re striving to be.
And I think that’s something worth celebrating.
